It remains unknown whether the prices would be increased when the current contracts come to an end or if the Russian company would renegotiate them earlier. According to experts this means that the role of oil intermediaries is slowly coming to an end and state-controlled enterprises will be held responsible for dealing oil. "For future contracts, which cover 80% of PKN Orlen's needs, this would have no significance.
What would be the reaction of the spot market? Time will tell," said PKN Orlen deputy president Cezary Filipowicz. He added, "If one can increase the prices, than he does it and not only talks about it." Lotos representatives also stated that the firm is not scared by the threat, explaining that it is not a customer of either Lukoil or its intermediaries.
