Foreign trade deficit at USD 8.8bn for the first six months

GUS reported that the deficit in foreign trade in the first six months amounted to USD 8.8bn, compared to USD 8.3bn in the same period last year. However, the increase of the deficit was slower than in previous years. In the first six months, Poland's exports amounted to USD 14.7bn, while imports were 23.5bn. Against the last year's figure, exports increased by 11.9%, while imports by 9.7%, so export growth was faster than the imports' one. Deputy President of GUS Janusz Witkowski said that in June, exports was 6% higher than in June 1999, which was a positive signal. The highest deficit was recorded in trade with developed countries (USD 5.5bn), including the deficit with the European Union of USD 4.1bn.
