Sugar beet plantators protest against Polski Cukier
About 300 employees and sugar beet growers from the Slaska Spolka Cukrowa (SSC) sugar group were protesting yesterday in front of the Treasury Ministry against plans to include SSC in the state-owned Polski Cukier holding, which is to be created under the law passed by the Sejm three weeks ago. The protesters urged the government to finish the sale of SSC, which groups 16 sugar plants, to France's Saint Louis Sucre (SLC). The deal with SLC, signed last year, is still to be approved by the Interior Ministry. In contradiction to the claims of supporters of the new law, the protesters said that without a foreign investor the sugar group would be too weak to operate on its own and make the necessary capital investment. kp,bb
