Chronowski to examine privatisation plans for the sugar industry
Treasury Minister Andrzej Chronowski said he would like to have the proposition of creating the sugar industry holding company Polski Cukier fundamentally analysed before a decision on the possible way of privatising the sector is made. It had been proposed that Polski Cukier be formed of 16 sugar companies that are left to be privatised at the last stage of the sugar sector's privatisation. It would be financed with the proceeds from the sale of other sugar companies, which are to be privatised in regional groups, except for the Silesian sugar holding that has been agreed to be sold to France's Saint Louis Sucre. The ministry selected Nordzucker AG, Suedzucker AG, Herbapol SA, and Pfeifer und Langen as strategic investors for the regional groups. The sugar industry privatisation plans have been subject to heavy criticism from legislators, representing the farmers lobby.
