Centertel to double the number of subscribers

Poland's smallest mobile-phone operator Centertel said it expected pre-tax earnings to reach a negative PLN 100mn (USD 23.04mn) in 2000. The company, which is jointly owned by the national operator TPSA and its strategic partner France Telecom, posted a net loss of PLN 330mn (USD 76.03mn) in H1. At the same time, the company expects to double the number of its subscribers from the current 1.5mn in 2001 and rise its revenue by 150% to PLN 1.6bn (USD 368mn). The three local mobile GSM operators are likely to increase the number of subscribers by 2.9mn this year (until the end of November, they had 2.6mn subscribers more than at the end of 1999). It is estimated that the Polish mobile-phone market is growing by 70% a year, but this pace of growth will decrease in 2001.
