At the end of Q1, BP had 343 petrol stations in Poland, just three fewer than Lotos at 346. Orlen remained the market leader by a wide margin with 1,888 stations. Also in the top five are Shell (315) and Statoil (253), followed by Lukoil (105) and Neste (100). BP has vowed to maintain its current rate of expansion in the years to come. In 2007 the company added 20 new stations. Meanwhile, Lotos' network shrank from 379 at the end of 2007 as the company continued to phase out its "partner station" model, deemed as inefficient. But it is not resting on its laurels. Most owners of partner stations are encouraged to join the company's franchise scheme, which currently consists of 71 stations and is expected to reach 80 by the end of the year. Lotos also plans to open between 10-20 new own outlets this year. Lotos aims to take 10% of the Polish market by value by 2012, up from 6-7% at the moment. BP's share is thought to be above 10%, although the company does not publish its figures. (Puls Biznesu, p. 13) R.M.
