Steinhoff asked not to cut power from PKP

Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Janusz Steinhoff ordered the power companies not to cut off supply of electricity to the Polish state-owned railways PKP, although it has failed to pay its electricity bills. Steinhoff said this would be detrimental from the sociological and economic point of view, as well as it would not add to Poland's credibility internationally. Recently the power companies in Elblag, Poznan, and Lodz have switched off power supply to PKP. Since the end of 1999, PKP's debt to the power companies have increased from PLN 4mn (USD 0.9mn) to PLN 180mn (USD 41mn).
