Special commission set up to examine the compensations for Nazi slave workers
Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Steinhoff will head a special commission to examine whether the Polish-German Reconciliation Foundation took a proper decision to carry out compensation payments for the Nazi slave labourers in zlotys instead of German marks. The decision to pay out the compensations in zlotys has depleted Poland's compensation fund by about PLN 50mn (USD 11.9mn) due to the changes in the zloty exchange rate, as a result of which many claimants may receive less money than they expected. The commission will decide whether the exchange rate used was fair, and how government representatives sitting on the fund's supervisory board affected its decisions.
