A referendum conducted among employees of Polish telecom giant Telekomunikacja Polska (TP SA), showed that workers are ready to strike if the company does not withdraw from its plans to reduce employment.

"Based on the initial results we're certain to get the required 50 percent turnout, and everything indicates that we will have a majority for a strike if the job cut plans remain," an employees' source said.

The news calls into question whether TP SA will be able to continue its restructuring program, aimed at making the company more efficient in the face of growing competition.

"This could cast doubt on TP SA's restructuring plans, so it's pushing the shares down- the market has been betting that the benefits from job cuts would show up in the results already this year," said Deutsche Bank analyst Krzysztof Kaczmarczyk.

TP SA plans to cut 3,500 of its 31,000 workers. Unions maintain that TP SA's main shareholder, France Telecom (FT), ordered the reductions, while FT says the decision to cut jobs was made on the Polish side. In January, around 1,000 TP SA employees protested outside the French embassy. The French government controls 43 percent of FT.

Full results of the vote will be released this week, and as of yet there is no date set for strikes to begin.

"The strike would happen if and when mass lay-offs started," the source said.
