State will not help small businesses
Poland's small and medium size enterprises will have to use their own financial resources to finance marketing, export promotion and upgrade projects next year, Economy Minister Janusz Steinhoff said on Monday. Steinhoff said that even after raising the funds earmarked for SMEs from this year's PLN 20mn (USD 4.62mn) to PLN 70mn (USD 16.13mn) in 2001, they would still be too low to have a significant influence. This means the government's role will be limited to creating growth-friendly business laws. Steinhoff added that some companies could benefit from listing on the Warsaw bourse, admitting at the same time that only about a hundred of Poland's 2.75mn SMEs would meet the stock exchange criteria.
