Fuel excise tax takes effect today
Beginning today, the excise tax on fuels is going up by PLN 0.04 per litre of unleaded petrol, by PLN 0.06 per litre of 94-octane regular petrol, and by PLN 0.04 per litre of Diesel oil. To compensate for the tax, Poland's two largest petrochemical companies, Rafineria Gdanska (RG) and Polski Koncern Naftowy (PKN) Orlen, both decided to raise wholesale prices of petrol (by PLN 90, or USD 20.5 per tonne) and of Diesel oil (RG by PLN 60, or USD 13.6 per tonne; PKN by PLN 50, or USD 11.4 per tonne). This is already the second increase of prices this week. In order to neutralise the imminent increase of inflation, The Economic Committee of the Cabinet recommended the government to lift import tariffs on fuels from the EU, CEFTA, EFTA and other countries that Poland has signed free-trade agreements with. Poland's current fuel import tariff amounts to 3% for petrol and 4% for Diesel fuel in case of these countries. Previously, the government had been planning to lift the tariffs beginning of next year, but now, it could be implemented in mid-September. The decision will be taken next Tuesday.
