BRE Bank gets highest rating
BRE Bank has received the highest note in this year's rating of Polish banks done by the think tank Gdańsk Institute for Market Economics (IBnGR). BRE Bank got its "A" rating thanks to the fact it was one of the few banks that in 1999 reported a satisfactory return to capital. The think tank's analysts believed the bank's financial standing was better than that of any other Polish bank. Other banks that were positively classified (B rating) included Citibank and Bank Handlowy. The lowest rating (D-) was bestowed to PKO BP because of the unsolved problem of the old housing loans. In general, the average rating of Poland's largest banks was lower than in previous years due to lower financial performance and lower quality credit portfolios. Financial results of the banking sector have been deteriorating due mainly to weaker economy and growing competition.
