Money supply up by 13.6% in 2001

In December, broad money supply rose by PLN 8.26bn (USD 2.05bn), or 2.5%, to a total of PLN 334.52bn, the National Bank of Poland (NBP) said. Broad money supply grew 13.6% in the whole 2001, after rising 11.7% in 2000. The data showed that Poles were less interested in taking loans than before, which is a result of higher interest rates and weak consumer demand. Consumer borrowing inched up 0.8% in December, and was up 14.6% in all of 2001, after rising 32% in 2000. Savings were also rising slower than a year before. The deposits of the individuals rose 11.7% from 2000, compared to growth by 24.4% in 2000. kp,bb
