Miners ask PM Buzek to dismiss Steinhoff
The Solidarity trade union of coal miners asked Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek to dismiss Economy Minister Janusz Steinhoff and his deputy Andrzej Karbownik. The unionists protest against the commencing of a coal mining sector reform that would transform seven mining companies into three coal concerns and the privatisation of the sector, without a prior approval from the unions. The ministry's plan calls for closing a significant number of pits which would lead to reduction of employment by as much as 50%.
