For most movie-goers, a trip to the cinema is about entertainment and escapism through film. Warsaw's Robert Majkut Design (RMD) studio, however, has created innovative interior-design concepts for the Multikino movie theater chain which work to bring the fantastic into the theater itself. The firm's futuristic project is based on ergonomic forms, such as ellipses, and an interplay between deep hues and bright colors. Intricate lighting schemes and multimedia wall projections are among the details incorporated by RMD to create a multi-dimensional cinematic experience before moviegoers even get to their seats.
"Poland is experiencing an evolution in quality across a range of areas, movie theaters included," says Robert Majkut of RMD. "The popular perception of quality is ripening and giving way to increased expectations - even demand - for improved quality of life. Cinemas are beginning to build a new identity and transform into attractive new multi-dimensional, multi-functional spaces."
In addition to its much-anticipated theater complex in Warsaw's Złote Tarasy, which is scheduled to open soon, Majkut's innovative design has been implemented in three other Multikino locations across Poland. In Poznań, the characteristic architecture of the Stary Browar center, a former brewery, provided a real challenge for how to harmonize the decidedly far-out style that RMD was going after. The studio's efforts to bridge the gap has resulted in a retro design that makes references to "Star Wars" and other classic science fiction films. Every element of the theater's structure - from the foyer to the screening room - takes its shape from the conceptual form of a spaceship.
Wrocław's Arkady Wrocławskie and Pasaż Grunwaldzki will also get their own "out-of-this-world" interiors. RMD's fluid designs for Wrocław feature a number of gleaming mirrored surfaces and soft curves, for example.
All the projects are said to create an environment that is visually stimulating without neglecting the bodily comforts of moviegoers - RMD has extended the fluidity of its design to every detail and particularly to seating (arguably the moviegoer's most fundamental concern). The new projection rooms also boast state-of-the-art digital systems that will provide high-quality picture and sound.
"Cinema is show business, after all, and the reality of the movie theater should provide an environment that can match the fantasy of the cinema," Majkut remarks. "This is only the beginning of the race to grab the public's attention and gain its favor."
