President signs the budget-related bill
President Aleksander Kwasniewski signed the budget-related bill that was going to help the state to save some PLN 3.4bn (USD 821mn) in 2001. The bill was passed by the Sejm on Dec 15, and amended by the Senate a few days later. The Finance Ministry believes, however, the amendments will lower the budget savings to PLN 3bn (USD 724mn). The most controversial changes in the bill include the teachers' charter modification, which limits the growth of teachers' salaries in 2001 and lowers budget spending on education by PLN 1.8bn (USD 435mn).
