Poland against Gazprom's plans concerning a pipeline bypassing Ukraine
The Russian gas concern Gazprom confirmed it had signed an agreement with a Western European consortium on a gas pipeline project to send natural gas to Western Europe through Poland but bypassing Ukraine. The consortium of Germany's Ruhrgas and Wintershall, France's Gaz de France, and Italy's Snam would build a pipeline through Belarus, Poland and Slovakia. The Polish government said that, although such a pipeline would benefit Poland economically, it should not be done against the interests of Ukraine. Poland offered to negotiate the issue with the participation of all interested parties. Ukraine said it would not protest Gazprom plans, as it believed Poland would not allow for their realisation.
