Nurses blockade roads and streets while the government still refuses wage increases
The Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives (OZZPiP) escalated protests yesterday by blockading several roads and streets, including bridges in Warsaw. In many places they were confronted with police. At the same time, the talks with the government were suspended as the nurses said the government had not made any definite offer. They still demand a wage increase of PLN 500 (USD 115) a month to be paid this year. Deputy Prime Minister and Labour Minister Longin Komolowski said, however, that wage increases that the nurses demand were not possible this year. Meanwhile, a survey shows that 85% of Poles support the nurses' demands. More than half of the respondents thought that the protests were definitely justified, 35% support the action, while only 2% were critical. 65% believe it is all right for nurses to stop working in protest. 27% of those surveyed disagreed.
