Verheugen: Poland's timetable to join EU in 2003 might be possible
The EU eenlargement commissioner Guenter Verheugen said he did not rule out Poland's ambitious plan of closing negotiations with EU by the end of 2001, but added that it would depend on Poland's readiness, as EU should concentrate on quality rather than speed of negotiations. According to the Polish government, it would be possible to close 11 out of 16 areas of negotiations in the first half of this year. Poland's ambassador to EU Jan Truszczynski said that the greatest chance of closing the talks are in six areas: free flow of goods, tariff union, social and labour policy, transportation, power, and taxes.
