Gazprom reportedly withdraws from gas pipeline project
According to the Russian agency Interfax, the Russian gas concern Gazprom withdrew from its plans to build the gas pipeline in Poland that would link its Yamal pipeline with Slovakia bypassing Ukraine, and which had been one of the issues in the prolonged Polish-Russian gas talks. The information was not confirmed by the company or the Polish government. According to Interfax, the decision to scrap the project was based on the need to save money, since the investment has been estimated at over USD 1bn. According to the Polish daily newspaper Rzeczpospolita, Gazprom might want to increase the capacity of the existing Yamal Pipeline, which currently carries around 17bn cubic metres of gas annually from Russia to Western Europe through Poland. Additionally, the Ukrainian Prime Minister Anatoliy Kinakh said that Ukraine had signed a contract with Russia that guarantees that a minimum of 120bn cubic metres of Russian gas would be transferred through his country annually until 2014. kp,bb
