Poland still does not approve plans for the Yamal gas pipeline despite the Russian PM Kasyanov's plight
At a last-minute meeting on May 26 with the Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek conveyed the Polish position on the construction of the Yamal gas pipeline, to which Kasyanov would respond in two weeks time. The two countries have been arguing for months on the route of the pipeline from the Belarus border through Poland to Slovakia, where it would link up with an existing pipeline to western Europe. PM Buzek said a number of questions still had to be reviewed on gas transit, and gave no indication on when the Polish government might approve the pipeline, but most analysts believe Poland would eventually approve the pipeline so as not to lose lucrative transit fees. The branch pipeline would allow Russia to export an additional 60 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Western Europe on top of the 120 billion cubic meters it currently exports, mostly via Ukraine. bb, kp
