The Warsaw stock exchange sinks to new 2000-lows on Monday
The Warsaw stock exchange sank to new 2000-lows on Monday, due to Friday's sell-off on the New York technology NASDAQ and Monday's slump in Western Europe. The market seems to ignore the re-election of President Aleksander Kwasniewski, whose victory had been widely expected, but in the morning single price auction the blue-chip WIG 20 index dropped 1.7% to 1,637, and was down another 1.2% to 1,618 after the afternoon continuous trading. The index lost over 33% from its peak in March. The all-share WIG index lost 1.6% to 16,156 -- the lowest level since early December. Further losses cannot be excluded, as the macroeconomic situation is not attractive enough for foreign investors to come back to the market.
