TPSA to take over Wirtualna Polska Internet portal
Telekomunikacja Polska (TPSA) said it agreed to take control over the Polish second-largest Internet portal Wirtualna Polska. The two companies reached a preliminary agreement on the terms of the deal, under which TPSA would buy 50% of WP's shares plus one share. The final deal is expected to be signed in June. Although the price of the transaction has not been revealed, there are speculations that WP's shares to be sold might be worth about USD 50mn. The purchase will allow TPSA to gain a strong position on the Polish Internet market, something it failed to achieve with its own portal (www.portal.pl), while the loss making WP would get the capital needed to maintain its market share. The deal will increase the gap between WP and another market leader Onet.pl, as well as with other portals operating in Poland, including the listed company Interia.pl, and Hoga.pl, which is now waiting for its debut on the Warsaw bourse. bb, kp
