The value of shares listed on the bourse lost zł.244 billion. Rzeczpospolita estimates that in this period the savings of 16.5 million Poles located in open pension funds and investment funds fell by almost zł.50 billion. This was all caused by the financial crisis in the USA, the effects of which might be increasingly visible in the coming period in Europe.

"The Polish financial system is not endangered by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, but the consequences of the crisis will continue to grow. It turns out that the economic slow down in the Euro zone and in Poland will be more severe than it was initially anticipated several months ago," said Michał Szymański, of OFE Commercial Union, the largest pension fund on the domestic market.

The WIG20 index on the WSE lost 3.58 percent in value yesterday, setting a new low of the bear market. WIG was down 3.03 percent.
