So far, budget hotels account for some 19 percent of all Orbis outlets. By the end of 2009 the figure is expected to grow to 50 percent. Etap hotels will first appear in Warsaw, Częstochowa, Szczecin, Kraków and later also in Poznań and Gdynia.

"Construction is going to proceed really fast as Orbis already owns a significant number of undeveloped plots in many places in Poland so it's only a matter of actually erecting new buildings," said Orbis CEO Jean-Philippe Savoye. For both refurbishments and construction Orbis has earmarked zł.725 million.

The logos of all three Orbis subsidiaries - Orbis Grupa Hotelowa (Hotel Group), Orbis Travel and Orbis Transport - have also been changed. "The cost of the new logo and the advertising campaign is not very big - we didn't need to modify the budget as our expenditures for that end were easily covered by the regular marketing budget. The size of the operation can by no means be compared to that of Idea-Orange. In our case it's more about new stationery and door tablets," said Savoye.

Orbis plans 500 redundancies during company restructuring, a move that has been widely criticized by the staff and trade unions. According to Savoye the groups Q3 2005 results will be better than a year ago when the company generated a net income of zł.44.5 million but the actual figures will be revealed next week.

The moves are part of the company's strategy drafted by its French shareholder, Accor. Under the plan, the firm will continue refurbishing its existing hotels as well as building new hotels to widen its budget accommodation offer under the Ibis and Etap brands.
