KERM: more grain imports and a strategy for light industry

The Cabinet's Economic Council (KERM) decided that Poland will import 200,000 tons of wheat and 100,000 tons of other grain under a tax-free quota granted to the government's Agricultural Market Agency (ARR). KERM said the imported grain will supplement the national reserves, part of which had been used to cover a gap caused by the low harvest in summer. KERM also adopted a new development strategy for Poland's light industry in 2000-2005, calling for restructuring of the sector. The strategy is expected to result in a 0.2%-0.3% increase in the country's GDP, as well as boost exports by 4%-6%, and imports by 3%-4.5% annually. The value of the light industry's exports is estimated at USD 3.2bn a year. The plan includes solutions to problems connected with expected reduction of the 240,000-strong workforce in the sector, such as introduction of a benefit system for laid-off employees. KERM also decided to recommend a bill allowing alcohol and cigarette manufacturers to operate in Poland under business permits instead of complex licences.
