The head of the Civic Platform parliamentary club Bogdan Zdrojewski has announced that in the coming year the Polish military contingent will be withdrawn from Iraq. "This was supposed to be a one-year mission, but we have been present in Iraq for four years now," added Bronisław Komorowski, former Defense Minister. Meanwhile, President Lech Kaczyński made a declaration that the mission will take longer than expected, with troops unlikely to be withdrawn at the end of this year as this decision "would mean a loss of prestige" for the President, according to sources at the Foreign Ministry. A Presidential go ahead is crucial for the return of soldiers to Poland, as "he makes the final decision," said Defense Minister Aleksander Szczygło. There are currently 900 Polish soldiers on duty in Iraq, their rapid withdrawal was one of PO's pre-election promises. (Dziennik, p. 6) A.K.
