Poland might not join EU if to become net payer

Foreign Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz said Poland might decide not to join the European Union if it turned out it would have to pay more to the union's coffer than receive from it. Cimoszewicz added, however, that he hoped this would not happen. In his opinion, the only issue that might cause the conutry's unwillingness for European integration could be the lack of EU's unequivocal statement that Poland would not become a net payer after the accession. Cimoszewicz also expressed his worry that if EU delayed its agreement on financial issues, the year of 2004 as the date of EU's expansion could be in danger. Petra Erler, advisor to Commissioner for EU Enalgerment Guenter Verheugen, said, however, that EU had long agreed on the principle that none of the new members would have to pay more than to receive from the EU budget. kp,bb
