PKP wants to bid for UMTS license
The Polish State Railways (PKP) said it was interested in participating in the bid for the third-generation mobile phone UMTS system. PKP wants to co-operate with a company that is already on the market, and offers its infrastructure, fibre-optics network and its own energy sources. The tender for five licenses will start on Oct 2, and the bids must be presented by Dec 27. Four companies have already declared they will take part in the tender: the three current mobile-phone operators Polkomtel (Plus GSM), Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa (Era GSM), Centertel (Idea), and the largest independent telecom operator Netia. Last week, NG Koleje Telekomunikacja, which is PKP's consortium with Poland Telecom Operators (PTO) and British companies National Grid and Energys, said it might surrender its license for the domestic fixed long-distance services, as it could not negotiate favourable interconnection agreements with the national operator Telekomunikacja Polska (TPSA).
