Tomaszewski's return to politics may provoke another split in the ruling AWS
The ruling Solidarity Election Action (AWS) might face another conflict within its ranks following the return of the former deputy prime minister Janusz Tomaszewski. Although Tomaszewski, who has been recently cleared of accusations of collaboration with the communist-time secret services, has many supporters, he also has a number of enemies within the grouping, including some leaders of the AWS member parties: the Conservative Peasant Party (SKL) and the National Christian Union (ZChN). They are not happy that Tomaszewski might lead AWS's election campaign. There has been a growing group of supporters of Justice Minister Lech Kaczynski, who formally is not a member of any party, but is the most popular minister in the government. It is possible that a new political party of the right is created, that will include some members from AWS. bb, kp
