Parties agree to AWS federation plan; Krzaklewski refuses to resign
Leaders of three parties that constitute the ruling Solidarity Elections Action (AWS) accepted the proposal suggested by the Sejm's Speaker Maciej Plazynski to transform AWS into a federation with a collective leadership. The proposal calls for equal treatment of the four parties, ie. the Polish Party of Christian Democrats (PPChD), the Christian National Union (ZChN), the Conservative Peasant Party (SKL), and the AWS Social Movement (RS AWS), while also giving some preferences to the trade union Solidarity, which is the main force behind the organisation. The transformation would have to take place on Nov 10. The leader of AWS and Solidarity Marian Krzaklewski said however, that AWS should become one, unified party, but that would be possible only after the AWS congress in spring. He said only after AWS had been transformed he would decide whether to stay in the trade union or in politics. Resignation of Krzaklewski has been one of the main demands of the other AWS member parties, after the presidential elections, which showed meager popular support for the AWS head.
