Food prices go up 1.2% in first half of October

Food prices, which are considered the main driver of Poland's inflation, increased 1.2% in the first half of October from the second half of September, and 1.5% in month-on-month terms, according to the Central Statistical Office's (GUS) report. Miroslaw Gronicki, chief economist at the Center for Economic and Social Studies (CASE) said the price growth was higher than he had expected, but a single-digit inflation was still possible to be reached in October. In his opinion, food prices should go down in the second half of this month, when seasonal vegetable price hikes are over. On the other hand, this may not happen as the vegetable and fruit crops were lower than last year. GUS reported that prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, excluding fruit and vegetables, rose 0.2% from the second half of September and 0.5% from the first half of September. Prices of fruits and vegetables increased the most: by 11.1% and 8.9% respectively, and they were 12.3 and 9.9% higher than in the first half of the previous month.
