The new legislation would lower the school age from 7 to 6, limit the powers of educational authorities and enable associations to take over state schools. While the first of Minister Katarzyna Hall's proposals received near-unanimous support, lowering the school age being seen as key to raising the educational standards of Polish children, the other two are seen as paving the way for privatization.

This is unpalatable not just for the left and President Kaczyński, but also for PO's coalition partner, PSL, whose deputies have urged the government to ensure that association-run schools remain under the supervision of local
councils.
