    Design of a novel axial impeller as a part of counter-rotating axial compressor to compress water vapor as refrigerant

    Abstract

    A systematic investigation to understand the use of a novel axial impeller as a part of counter-rotating axial compressor to compress water vapor as refrigerant was undertaken. Blade angle was investigated at first to understand this novel impeller's geometry. A commercial CFD package, which solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, was used to compute the complex flow field of the impeller. Two hub/shroud tip ratios with different speed ratios were numerically simulated. The numerical simulation focused on the water vapor flow from compressor impeller inlet to outlet and the overall performance level and range were predicted. The numerical investigation revealed that at hub/shroud tip ratio of 0.54, maximum pressure ratio reached about 1.24 with isentropic efficiency around 75% at its design point. Detailed investigation into flow structure showed that a serious secondary flow exists between span ranges of 30-50%. An enlargement of hub/shroud tip ratio to 0.75 showed that pressure ratio had been improved significantly. By comparing different speed ratios and hub/shroud tip ratios, the study shows potential to utilize this novel axial impeller to compress water vapor as refrigerant.

    MSU researchers create engine 4 times more performant than internal combustion

    Here's something you probably didn't know about your average internal combustion car engine: it only uses 15 percent for propulsion ! Of course it could never go up to 100 percent or even close to this value, but fifteen is just too low. Researchers at Michigan State University thought about the same thing, so they built a prototype that uses 60 percent of fuel for propulsion; the prototype could reduce car emissions by 90%, and doesn't have any valves, pistons or crankshafts.

    The new prototype's core is a disk shaped wave generator, about as big as an average sauce pan, and requires no transmission, no cooling, so you'll not only be doing something great for nature and using less gas, but you will also be spending way less money on maintenance too.

    The engine works like this: "A rotor, with a wave-like pattern carved into channels. The fuel and air enter and mix through the central inlets. The rotor then spins, blocking the exit of gasses. As the pressure builds it will generate a shock wave that will compress the mixture. Once it is ignited an outlet opens to let the hot gases escape, and your car can move as usual." (Physorg).

    The prototype was developed and presented by Norbert Müller and other colleagues at Michigan State University at a meeting with the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency. It's exactly this kind of research that can make a big technological leap on a global scale that our society needs, if you ask me.

    (PhysOrg.com) -- Researchers at Michigan State University have built a prototype, based on the research first released in 2009, of the Wave Disk Generator -- an engine that does not have pistons, crankshafts or valves.

    This new model, which does away with the internal combustion engine of the past, has the potential to reduce auto emissions up to 90 percent, when compared to the current emissions level. This is because the engine uses roughly 60 percent of its fuel for propulsion, when you compare this to the typical cars engine that uses only 15 percent of fuel for propulsion, we can see how the increase is possible.
