Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek appointed new ministersPrime Minister Jerzy Buzek appointed new ministers, who would replace Freedom Union (UW) politicians. Janusz Steinhoff, the erstwhile industry minister, will now become deputy Prime Minister, Jaroslaw Bauc - finance minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski - justice minister, Jerzy Widzyk - the transportation minister.PM Buzek decided also to create a new ministry for regional development and housing, which will go to Jerzy Kropiwnicki, economic maverick and former chief of government's Center for Strategic Studies (RCSS). For some time, Bronislaw Geremek will remain the foreign minister, while Janusz Onyszkiewicz will stay at the position of the defence minister. It appears that greater say will have opponents of Balcerowicz's policy -- Steinhoff and Kropiwnicki. However, newly name Deputy PM Steinhoff told Gazeta Wyborcza daily that he feels responsible for continuation of Balcerowicz's line. The fight against inflation and high current account deficit must be pursued, he stressed. Steinhoff vowed also for acceleration of introducing EU rules by Polish parliament. New ministers are to be officially appointed by the president on Monday. President Aleksander Kwasniewski, at a motion from PM Buzek, recalled on Thursday three Freedom Union ministers. Addressing the PM, the president said the government headed by Jerzy Buzek should demonstrate stability, firmness and consistency, but also openness towards partners who may help in parliament.
