Money supply up by 0.5%; cash in circulation causes worries

According to the preliminary data of the National Bank of Poland (NBP), the money supply measured as M3, rose by PLN 65bn, or 0.5%, to a total of PLN 324.1bn in July. Since the beginning of the year, the money supply declined by 1.3%. NBP recorded an increase in deposits (private deposits grew 0.1% in July, but were 2.7% lower than in December) and in credits (loans to households rose by 1% in July). From the point of view of the Monetary Policy Council (RPP), which is to meet on Aug 27-28, the data on money supply have not changed much, although analysts raised the issue of surging cash in circulation, which might be an argument against a rate cut this month. The cash in circulation grew 1.3% in July m/m, and surged 18.3% y/y, after growing 17.9% y/y in June. Despite that, most analysts expect RPP to cut the rates this month due to a falling inflation and weak industrial production figures. kp,bb
