Money supply does not increase inflationary pressure

In February, the money supply rose PLN 2.71bn (USD 670.32mn), or 0.9%, to PLN 295.29bn (USD 72.5bn), the National Bank of Poland (NBP) said on Wednesday. From the beginning of the year, the broad money rose by 0.3% (14.6% y/y), which confirmed the easing trends in monetary pressures on inflation. Cash in circulation rose by 1.7% in February, but fell by 4.7% on the year. Consumer borrowing dropped by 0.4% and fell by 0.1% from the beginning of 2001. Corporate borrowing rose 0.8% and 2.1% respectively. Deposits increased by 1.1% in February and by the same rate from the start of the year. Personal deposits rose 2.7% and 5.5% respectively, as a consequence of high interest rates, which encouraged Poles to saving. NBP's preliminary data can be seen as positive and confirm that the trends of high deposits growth and low credit growth, observed for several months, are still in place. bb, kp
