German soldiers shot all men who tried to leave the burning houses. Natoniewski's family managed to escape but Winicjusz Natoniewski, six years old at the time, fell into an open flame and almost his whole body was burnt. "I started applying for financial aid in 1950 - the reply was negative," said Natoniewski. According to the head of the Polish-German Unity Foundation, there are around 200,000 Poles who suffered damages from the Germans during WWII but never received any compensation.
