A Polish company, BioMaxima, is to launch sales of a rapid screening test which can identify coronavirus infection in 10 minutes, the company said in a Friday press release. BioMaxima is also looking to register a molecular genetic test for the same purpose.
"As of March 27 this year, after prior notification to the President of Poland's Office for Registration of Medicinal Products (URPL), BioMaxima obtained the right to place on the market in Poland and other European Union countries a rapid immunochromatographic test to detect, in blood samples, the presence of IgM and IgG class antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, (known as coronavirus - PAP),” the statement read.
The testing kit consists of individually packed cassettes containing a sample tray in which the test material (whole blood, plasma or serum) and buffer drops included in the kit are placed. The result can be read in the test window after 10 minutes.
According to BioMaxima, a laboratory diagnostics company based in Lublin, eastern Poland, screening and confirmation genetic tests will become a permanent feature in the company's offer in the long-term perspective, while in the coming months these tests will hold a dominant position in total sales.
BioMaxima is also looking to register with URPL a molecular genetic test for SARS-CoV-2 detection using the real-time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method, the company said in a separate press release. The test is based on a protocol recommended by the WHO and was developed in cooperation with a biotech company from Spain.
According to the company, the test will use the most "effective and reliable method" for identifying the genetic material of the virus, with the result expected in under two hours.
The results of validation tests carried out at the Spanish national reference centre (Instituto de Salud Carlos III) confirmed the high (99 pct) sensitivity and specificity of the kit, BioMaxima said.
